The 1960s and 1970s saw a musical culture abrupt around protest and resistance. The Civil Rights Movement saw a huge uptick in songs written about the American experience and what people, especially African Americans, were going through. Your job is to analyze this music and pick out the songs YOU feel best represent this generation of American music. All the songs you pick need to have a clear theme that is defined at the top of your assignment. These can span genres, types, and countries.
Part One: PastYou need to pick ten songs written between 1955 and 1975 that illustrate your theme. Put them in a playlist. Each song needs an explanation for how it fits into your theme, the year it was recorded, and a quote from the song. You also need a photo or image that best captures the message of the song.
Part Two: Modern connection You need to pick five songs written in the past twenty years that illustrate your theme. Has the problem of the 1960s solved itself or do we struggle with the same issues today in our society?

Example:The End of Silence- Elaine Brown 1969This song was written in the wake of the killing of two Black Panther leaders at UCLA in a scuffle with US Organization, another black nationalism movement. It became the anthem of the Black Panther party because it stressed the need to defend oneself against attack and that the nonviolent movement had not worked. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC-JbT9ic7g
